MTLC: Advocating for Sustainable EU Textile Legislation

As part of the global effort to shape the future of textile legislation, ICA Bremen has joined the Make The Label Count (MTLC) coalition. This international campaign is dedicated to ensuring that EU policies support and protect natural fibre industries, particularly cotton.

Make the Label Count (MTLC) is a coalition of organisations representing natural fibres. This group is working to ensure that sustainability claims for textiles in the EU are fair and credible.

ICA Bremen, in collaboration with the International Cotton Association (ICA), is actively engaged in the Make The Label Count (MTLC) campaign, which advocates for changes to the Product Environmental Footprint (PEF) approach. Our efforts are concentrated on tackling important environmental problems like circularity, microplastic contamination, and plastic waste.

Our mission is to uphold fair and trustworthy sustainability claims for textiles by ensuring that natural fibres, such as cotton, are fairly represented in EU environmental policies. By collaborating, ICA Bremen and ICA are influencing critical legislative reforms that correspond with the EU’s Green Deal and Circular Economy goals, ensuring the future of sustainable cotton.

The advantages of natural fibres and the effects of rapid fashion on the environment are not adequately covered by the PEF framework as it is. Our goal is to safeguard cotton’s future by enhancing the PEF and assisting policymakers and consumers in making more sustainable textile decisions.

Key Areas of Focus:
Advocating for Change: Supporting the inclusion of new indicators for microplastic pollution, plastic waste, and circularity in the PEF.
Collaboration: Working with industry experts and policymakers to ensure the cotton industry’s voice is heard in shaping EU environmental policies.
Raising Awareness: Promoting the need for more accurate and fair sustainability claims for textiles in the EU.
